ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team earned yet another shutout as they held the New Mexico Lobos off the scoreboard in match one of their two-game road trip. Maddie Buckley recorded a career-tying performance facing 15 shots and recording five saves.
FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
"That was a really good performance against a perennial conference champion in tough conditions," said Stumpf. "We had a lot to deal with travel, playing at elevation and the wind all played a factor. We got another shutout and there were a lot of other positives to take from this match."
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Gauchos to open up the match recording two of the first three shots in the game. Devin Greer's eighth minute scoring chance was denied by the Lobo keeper. A shot inside the penalty area was knocked away and then cleared by New Mexico.
10 minutes later the Lobos responded with a chance of their own. A throw in and then a cross into the box found the head of the dangerous Presley Devey, but Maddie Buckley was quick to react and shut down the chance. Devey took another shot a few minutes later but was blocked before it could reach the goal.
Following the blocked shot, a Lobo attacker on a run on the right side of the box called for the ball. Strong defense by Zoe Franks quickly shut another scoring chance and kept the game at nil-nil. Both parties had a few more chances but could not convert and went to halftime tied at zero.
With both teams settled into the match, each side saw fewer chances in the second half. New Mexico had the early momentum firing off three shots in the first seven minutes. The Gauchos quickly changed the momentum as they were awarded a couple corner kicks and saw a few good chances at goal, but again could not convert.
The back and fourth chances continued for the rest of the match with neither goalkeeper flinching. The Gauchos and Lobos played to a scoreless draw as both keepers stood their ground for the full 90 minutes.
