SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball took on Cal Poly tonight in a rendition of the Blue-Green rivalry that forced both teams to leave it all on the floor. After a standoff match, the Mustangs managed to win the final couple of points in the fifth and final set to take the win.
Santa Barbara started strong, quickly stealing the first set of the match 25-16. Thanks to four three-point bursts, the Gauchos flew to the finish line. Santa Barbara got an early lead at 10-5 that the Mustangs never made it back from.
The Mustangs had a little more fight in them during the second, staying tight with the Gauchos through 10-10. The teams tussled through the tens, but the Mustangs ran away with a final five-point run that brought them the set 25-18.
The match was even through the third, but the Gauchos made it first to 15-12. Cal Poly tied it up to 15-15, and the teams continued to exchange points. After a tie at 22-22, the Mustangs used their home court advantage to win it 25-22.
The Gauchos tied it up after the fourth set, taking it back 25-20. They held on to their several-point lead after establishing it at 18-14.
The fifth set was charged, featuring a standstill at 6-6. Though Cal Poly created an intimidating 12-8 lead, the Gauchos did not shrink and made four more points of their own. It was Cal Poly, however, who managed to take the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
