Honer to Participate in US Open Wild Card Playoffs

ORLANDO, Fla. – UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis senior Amelia Honer has been selected to participate in the US Open Wild Card Playoffs, the United States Tennis Association announced Wednesday. Honer is one of four players in the women's single field.

The USTA's newly announced event, featuring top American collegiate players, aims to more than double the average number of college athletes receiving US Open wild cards. A total of six wild card entries are guaranteed. Winners of the singles and doubles competitions will earn main draw wild cards for the US Open, while the men's and women's singles runners-up will receive wild cards into the qualifying draw.

Honer was selected for the singles field by a committee made up of USTA staff, college coaches and ITA representatives.

The Pennsylvania native earned wins over nationally-ranked singles opponents in the ITA fall tournament slate. She clinched the NCAA Women's Singles Championship spot after winning the ITA Southwest Regional Championship with straight-set wins in six consecutive matches, including the championship victory over the No. 8 player in the ITA rankings.

In the spring, Honer was an unstoppable and reliable force for the Gauchos going 17-2 in singles play at the No. 1 position, helping Santa Barbara to the Big West Regular-Season Title and Tournament Championship. She picked up wins over four nationally-ranked opponents including an impressive victory over the 6th-ranked player out of Stanford in February.

The US Open Wild Card Playoffs will take place June 16–18 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Singles semifinals will be played Monday, followed by doubles semifinals on Tuesday. All finals will be held Wednesday. Matches will be streamed on the USTA National Campus website.
