SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Gauchos concluded their opening homestand going 1-1-1. Coming off a win over WAC Champions Cal Baptist, the Gauchos looked to build on that momentum against West Coast Conference opponents San Diego. Santa Barbara went up early in the first half, but an own goal in the 70
th minute was costly to the end result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Santa Barbara started on the attack quickly as they took three shots within the first six minutes of play. None were on target, but it was not what the Toreros were anticipating. After the initial Gaucho attack, the Toreros nearly netted the first goal of the game. Great ball movement by USD led to a flick by a USD attacker.
Maddie Buckley in the net got a piece, and
Reese Wroblewski had her back, making a sliding save to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
After a few failed corner kicks, the Gauchos got back on the attack with some good ball movement of their own.
Emma Corcoran stole the ball in the Gauchos' attacking part of the field and found
Hayden Halscheid, who turned and passed the ball to
Caitlyn Simons. The sophomore sent it wide to
Olivia Howard, who made a move, found an open shooting lane and beat the keeper low and right to give the Gauchos the early lead. The Gauchos carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, San Diego came out with new energy and went on the attack early. It continued for the better part of the first half of the second period and paid off in the 70
th minute. With much of the momentum, the Toreros crossed a ball to the near post. The Gaucho defense tried to clear the ball, but it would unfortunately not get high of the net and be an own goal.
The two sides made some final attempts to score over the remaining 20 minutes, but nothing would fall and the Gauchos and Toreros ended in a 1-1 draw.
