Rolland has Strong Week at Battle in the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis team competed in the Battle in the Bay tournament over the weekend, with Lucca Liu and Dominique Rolland each securing notable victories against strong competition.

THURSDAY
Liu and Rolland entered the weekend as the nation's No. 59-ranked doubles pairing. They opened play with an early morning match, earning an 8-5 victory over Santa Clara's Alexander Watanabe Eriksson and John Kim.

Later in the day, both Gauchos returned to the courts for singles competition. Liu rallied in the second set to force a tiebreak before ultimately falling to Stanford's No. 5 seed Nicholas Godsick, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Rolland, meanwhile, faced TCU's Cosme Rolland de Ravel and battled through three sets, prevailing in a decisive third-set tiebreak, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4)

FRIDAY
On the second day of play, Liu and Rolland started with a morning doubles match, coming up just short in an 8-6 loss to Michigan State's third-seeded tandem of Taym Alazmeh and Ozan Baris.

Rolland quickly shifted focus to singles action, where he responded with a straight-sets win over Cal's Tiago Silva, 7-5, 6-2. Later in the afternoon, he continued his strong run by outlasting Texas's No. 3 seed Sebastian Gorzny in a three-set match, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.

SATURDAY
As Rolland advanced to the semifinals with his victory over Gorzny, he set up a rematch with Ozan Baris, who had previously prevailed over him in doubles play. In two tightly contested sets, Rolland's run in the tournament ended in a narrow 7-6 (5), 6-4 loss to the No. 2 seed. However, redemption came in the Battle in the Bay's Shootout Challenge, where Rolland defeated Baris in a 10-4 tiebreak and also Duncan Chan, the eventual tournament champion, 10-5, to secure a spot in the Fairfield Challenger.
