SAN FRANCISCO – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team sent two student athletes to the Bay Area to compete in the season-opening tournament, the Battle in the Bay Classic.
Emma Tutoveanu won three singles matches en route to a semifinal round appearance before falling to 37
th-ranked Anastasiia Grechkina from Pepperdine.
SINGLES COMPETITION
Emma Tutoveanu and
Raphaelle Leroux made quick work of their opening round opponents, taking down their respective oppositions in straight sets. As the two entered the round of 16, Leroux battled with the 97
th-ranked singles player from Pepperdine but ultimately fell, ending her singles play for the weekend. Tutoveanu won a three-set match to advance to the quarterfinals, where she would face the 62
nd-ranked player in Imogen Haddad from USC.
The sophomore made quick work of Haddad and punched her ticket to the semifinals. She faced top-seeded Anastasiia Grechkina, the 37
th-ranked singles player from Pepperdine. That is where her run would end after a strong showing in the season opener.
DOUBLES COMPETITION
The duo of Tutoveanu and Leroux lost their opening round match, but bounced back in the consolation bracket beating Arizona State's pairing by default. After advancing to the consolation semifinals the two sophomores fell to a San Jose State pairing, ultimately ending their doubles run.
