Women’s Volleyball Splits Day One of Dayton Invitational

DAYTON, Ohio – UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball went 1-1 today against Illinois State and the University of Dayton during day one of the weekend's slate. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Illinois State

The Gauchos took on the Redbirds to start the day and pulled off a 3-0 sweep. The match was a dynamic mix of point gains, with the teams grappling through to the end. 

Illinois State took a head start, making the first five points then getting to an 11-6 lead. 

Santa Barbara made those five points back to tie it up 11-11. Illinois State got ahead again, but the Gauchos persevered and eked out an overtime win of 26-24. 

During the second set, the Redbirds led the path to 15-12. The Gauchos, however, then procured a nine-point scoring run that paved the way for their next set win of 25-20. 

Finally, the third featured another overtime battle, which the Gauchos won 28-26. 

Eva Travis led in kills, notching 12, while Gabi Martinez put up a close ten. Ayva Ostovar placed 23 assists, while Kiersten Schmitt continued her solo-blocking talent and made four. She now has 15 for the season. 

Dayton 
UC Santa Barbara won out of the gate, claiming the first set 25-17. The Gauchos made a spectacular run to the finish, with Dayton's points dotting along Santa Barbara's run. 

Dayton did manage to take the remaining three sets, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-23. The Gauchos came back in the fourth set to tie it 23-23, but Dayton was able to defend their home court. 

Travis picked up a double double, featuring 14 kills and 12 digs. She landed 26 kills for the day and led both matches in total kills. Layanna Green also contributed, handing Dayton eight kills and four block assists.  

NEXT UP
The Gauchos will face Wright State at 7:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 19 to close out the Dayton Flyer Invitational.
