Shaver Secures Big West Decathlon Bronze for Gauchos

IRVINE, Calif. (May 9) – The UC Santa Barbara multis squad wrapped up competition at the Big West Multis Championships on Friday, highlighted by a podium finish from sophomore Hudson Shaver in the decathlon. 

DECATHLON
Shaver closed out a strong two day performance with a third place finish in the decathlon, totaling 7413 points to earn a spot on the conference podium. The sophomore placed second in three events, including the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.98, discus with a personal record mark of 45.22m, and a pole vault personal record of 4.41m.

In the javelin, Shaver added a sixth place finish at 52.00m, and grinded out the 1500 to earn a time of 4:51.04 to secure his bronze medal. 

HEPTATHLON
In the heptathlon, Jessica Mackenzie led the Gauchos with a fifth place finish overall, scoring 5371 points. Mackenzie earned third place finishes in both the long jump with a mark of 5.80m and javelin at 40.34m to lead UCSB during the final day of competition.

Bella Vally followed closely behind in seventh place overall with a personal best 5268 points. Vally posted a fourth place finish in the javelin at 39.19m and added a sixth place mark in the long jump at 5.64m.

Hanna Barmettler finished 11th overall with 4817 points, highlighted by a fifth place finish in the 800m at 2:20.90. Amanda Eames placed 12th overall with 4753 points, while Ally Tito rounded out the Gaucho group in 13th with 4593 points. 

NEXT UP
The rest of the UC Santa Barbara track and field team will compete at the Big West Championships, hosted by Long Beach State May 15-16.
