Talamantes Nets Her Second Game-Winner of the Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches after defeating Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 on Wednesday night. UC Santa Barbara scored the only goal in the first half and finished off the shutout while the Roadrunners put seven shots on goal. Maddie Buckley made seven saves, including five before halftime, as the teams ended even with 11 shots apiece.

FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
"We got our second straight shutout, which is a positive, and earned three big points on the road," said Stumpf. " It was a solid overall performance, but I do feel we need to be a little more clinical in the final third because the margin for error continues to be too thin."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Alondra Talamantes put UC Santa Barbara in front at 33:41, finishing after a ball played near the top was headed backward and popped over the goalkeeper, with Devin Greer and Emily Caughey credited with assists. Earlier, UC Santa Barbara started to pressure the Bakersfield defense with Ava Jarolimek taking a shot high and Delilah Vega-Aguilar forcing a save less than a minute later. The Gauchos also earned corner kicks in the 18th and 21st minutes, while Maddie Buckley kept the Roadrunners off the board with five first-half saves. UC Santa Barbara took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Gauchos kept CSUB off the scoreboard throughout the second half and finished off a 1-0 road win and back-to-back shutouts. Prior to that, UC Santa Barbara pushed forward from the 52nd to the 62nd minute, getting shots from Chayse Yu, Vega-Aguilar and Jarolimek along with a corner kick. Despite the efforts, the score remained 1-0. Buckley answered the Roadrunners' chances in that stretch with saves in the 60th minute and the 63rd. UC Santa Barbara continued to create chances late, including a saved Greer shot in the 79th minute and a Talamantes attempt in the 88th, before closing out the final score.

UP NEXT
UC Santa Barbara will stay on the road as they head to California Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Gauchos will look to avenge their loss from earlier in the season against the Lancers as UCSB and CBU kick off at 2 p.m. with the match streamed through ESPN+.
