Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After committing 31 turnovers, UCSB (1-11) lost its second game to Santa Clara (9-2) this season with a 66-48 final score at the Leavey Center on Friday night.
Jasmine Ware came off the bench to lead the Gauchos with 10 points and also added a pair of rebounds and a steal. Behind her in the scoring column was Makala Roper – who sunk back-to-back threes in the third quarter – with nine points. Coco Miller also had eight points in the game, but made most of her impact on defense with her team-high four steals.
UCSB out-rebounded Santa Clara 36-31 and also collected a game-high 16 offensive rebounds. The rebounding game was a team effort for the Gauchos, as Miller paced the team with five, while three picked up four boards apiece (Kendra Morrison, Je Zhé Newton, Roper).
In the first half, both teams went off to sluggish starts on offense, as UCSB had a 30.8 shooting percentage and Santa Clara finished with a 29.6 clip. Santa Barbara was outscored 13-6 in the first quarter, but stayed within seven points before the halftime break.
The Gauchos narrowed the Bronco lead down to two points following an 8-2 run. Ware got the stretch started in knocking down a baseline jumper at the 7:37 mark. Though Santa Clara's Morgan McGwire answered back with a lay up on the next possession, the Gauchos fired off six unanswered points. UCSB registered the first four of those points with their work in the post, as Chaya Durr and Kendra Morrison both finished inside, while Miller capped off the run with a steal-and-score. With that bucket, the freshman made the score 16-14 Santa Clara with 6:22 left before halftime. However, the Broncos closed out the half with an 8-3 run to grab the 24-17 advantage.
UCSB then opened the second half in a big way by scoring three three-pointers in the first two minutes. Miller poured the first one in the opening possession, while Roper hit a pair of downtown looks in two of the next three possessions.
Roper's first three made it a two-point game at 25-23, but the Broncos again had a response and went back up by double figures following their largest run of the night at 17-3. The Gauchos would remain behind by at least 10 points until the final buzzer.
