Gauchos Drop Match to Ducks 5-2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif- The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (3-4) fell to the University of Oregon Ducks (4-3) by a score of 5-2 on Friday.

The day began with the Gauchos losing the doubles point despite a new look to their line-up.

First off was the number two pair for the Gauchos consisting of Jaimee Gilbertson and Priscila Garcia. The two fell behind early and were never able to catch up, losing 8-3 to the Ducks' Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving.

The Gauchos were then able to get a win at number three doubles, as Melissa Baker teamed up with Luisa Ortiz Candido to take down Kadie Hueffner and Lina Akesson by a score of 8-3.

The last match decided who would receive the doubles point, and the Ducks were able to get it. April Scatliffe and Natalie Da Silveira fell to Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita 8-4.

Despite the loss, head Coach Simon Thibodeau liked the look of his doubles line up.

"I liked out doubles combination today," he said. "We need to play faster from the baseline and become more opportunistic when we have chances."

With Oregon up 1-0, the ladies headed into singles.

Lou Adler was still out with a foot injury, so the Gauchos had to bump their roster up a position.

Candido, who hadn't seen much action all season long, was off the court first, winning at the number six position 6-2, 6-1 over Oregon's Allie Hueffner.

Da Silveira, despite a team leading five singles wins, was unable to find her rhythm and fell to Tobita 6-2, 6-1 on court two.

Baker put up a fight on court four, but just couldn't pull out a win in either of her sets, losing to Kluiving 6-4, 6-4. Kluiving remains undefeated in singles this season, now 6-0.

Stacy Yam showed great composure and patience at the number five spot. She was able to keep the lead from the start and win in her first set, but fell early in her second. Being down 2-5 in the second set, Yam came roaring back, winning five straight games to win it. The final score was 6-4, 7-5 in favor of Yam.

With Yam's match, the score was 3-2 with just two courts left playing. Oregon only needed one to clinch the win.

April Scatliffe was in a long battle with Long, that ended with a controversial line call by the on court official. Despite protesting the call, the official ruled the match over and Long won 6-4, 6-4.

The first court match-up between Gilbertson and Rose was a three set battle. Gilbertson took the first set 6-3 after jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Rose answered in the second, winning 6-2. Gilbertson trailed in the third set and was never able to take the lead. Rose was declared the winner after three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Gauchos will have a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow as they take on Loyola Marymount at 1PM.
