Gauchos Take Down Lions 6-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos took down the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday by a score of 6-1.

The day started out on a positive note as the Gauchos were able to secure just their second doubles point all season.

April Scatliffe and Natalie Da Silveira teamed up to take on Jessica Perez and Ellie Grossman. The Gaucho duo were able to get the first number one doubles win this season for UCSB, winning 8-1.

Jaimee Gilbertson and Stacy Yam came together to get another doubles win, defeating Lisa Piller and Anna Romeka 8-2, clinching the doubles point for the Gauchos.

Luisa Ortiz Candido and Melissa Baker were able to finish their match, despite the team having already clinched the point. The two defeated Andrea Crespo and Julia Norlin 8-5.

In singles, the Gauchos continued their domination.

Candido, who hadn't seen much action so far this season, played number six  as she did yesterday and continued her winning ways, defeating Norlin 6-0, 6-0.

Candido has won 18 straight games since Fridays match.

"Luisa's performances are exactly what we ask at number six," head coach Simon Thibodeau said of Candido. "She brings a positive spirit and solid game play that inspires the whole team. She's always ready to jump in and compete."

Next off was Scatliffe, who played a very solid and consistent match at the number three spot, defeating Grossman 6-1, 6-3.

Baker fell behind early in her match at number four but came storming back after being down three games in the first to defeat Kristine Kouyoumjian 6-4, 6-2. This win clinched the match for the Gauchos.

Da Silveira had a roller coaster of a match at number two, falling in the first set 6-1. She was able to answer right back in the second, taking it 6-1 and then winning the third set 6-3 to get the win over Crespo.

Gilbertson, playing number one for the Gauchos, ended up needing a tie breaker to declare a winner. Thanks to her never-give-up attitude, Gilbertson was able to defeat Perez 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.

The last match of the day was Yam on court five. Unfortunately, Yam was unable to come out with a win, falling to Romeka 4-6, 7-6, 10-6.

The Gauchos will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow against Santa Clara University at 11AM at the Rec Center courts.
