PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.- The No. 68 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (11-6) showed off their strong singles against the No. 57 University of San Fransisco Dons (8-6) on Saturday, defeating them 5-2.
The Gauchos dropped another doubles point with a new look lineup as the dynamic duo of Jaimee Gilbertson and Stacy Yam were the only UCSB representatives to get a win despite a great effort by Natalie Da Silveira and her partner Priscila Garcia, who dropped their match in a tie breaker. However, the strong singles play of the Gaucho unit were able to get the job done.
Scatliffe was the first off because her opponent Sofia Holmberg retired after Scatliffe's first set 6-3 win.
Baker took care of business in the number three spot, taking down Milica Hadzai-Tanovic 6-3, 6-4.
Gilbertson got off to a slow start in her match, dropping the first set 0-6, but was able to find her groove to take the next two sets 6-3 and 6-2.
Luisa Ortiz Candido got the clinching victory for the Gauchos in three sets as she was able to defeat Ines Teixeira 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Stacy Yam brought her winning momentum from her match clinching win over Hawaii over to Pebble Beach with her, as she knocked off Genevieve McCloskey in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
The Gauchos only lost one match in the singles department, and it came from a rare source. Da Silveira, who was 12-4 going into her match, lost to Marina Nikolic in a three setter that saw two set tie breakers. The final score had Nikolic on top 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3.
The Gauchos return home on Friday to take on Big West opponent Cal State Fullerton at 1:30PM.
