LONG BEACH, Calif.- The No. 57 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (12-8) were unable to get a win against Big West powerhouse Long Beach State (13-5), losing 6-1.
The Gauchos looked to come back after a loss to Big West counterpart UC Irvine last weekend, but were unable to take down the top team in the conference. With this win, Long Beach State clinched their eighth regular season conference championship since 2006.
Long Beach started the match with a sweep of the doubles. The closest match for the Gauchos came on court one, where Melissa Baker and Luisa Ortiz Candido brought the match to a tie breaker, but ultimately lost to Ebba Unden and Hayley Thompson 8-7 (7-4).
The Gauchos were able to avoid the sweep in singles thanks to Natalie Da Silveira, who was able to defeat Unden 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Candido showed promise on court six, bringing her match to a third set, but ultimately fell to Laura Eales 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
With the loss, UC Santa Barbara now stands at third in the Big West with a 4-2 conference record.
The Gauchos have two matches left in the regular season, both being against conference opponents.
UC Santa Barbara will take on UC Riverside tomorrow at 12PM in Riverside.
