SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The No. 63 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (14-8) ended their regular season with a win on senior day against rivals Cal Poly by a score of 4-0.
Stacy Yam and April Scatliffe, the only two seniors on the Gaucho squad, were honored at the match by head coach Simon Thibodeau, who enjoyed watching Yam improve over the years and loved Scatliffe's drive and attitude on the court.
The Gauchos were able to send off their seniors on a high note, as they were able to get the doubles point to start the match. Lou Adler and Natalie Da Silveira were able to get the first win on court two by a score of 8-3.
Yam teamed up with Jaimee Gilbertson to play at the number three spot. The two started off slow, falling behind 0-3 to start the match, but were able to find their groove to take a 4-3 lead. They only gave up one more game while winning the next four as Yam sealed off the win with a screaming overhead winner that skipped off the baseline between the two Cal Poly opponents. Yam and Gilbertson took the 8-4 win to clinch the point for the Gauchos.
On the singles side, Melissa Baker was the first off. After losing the first game of the first set, she battled back to take the 6-4 win. She continued to battle in the second to eventually win the match 6-4, 6-4.
Da Silveira was the next win for the Gauchos. After a dominant 6-4 first set win, Da silveira found some trouble finishing off her opponent in the second. However, the freshman, who has been solid all year for the Gaucho unit, was able to get the 6-2, 7-5 win.
Adler, playing her in her first singles match since an early season match against St Mary's, was able to get back to her winning ways right where she left off, getting a win on the show court 7-5, 6-2 to seal the deal for the Gauchos.
UCSB ends the regular season with a 14-8 overall record including a 6-2 Big West record.
