Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 22 Cal State Fullerton erupted for 10 runs while holding No. 6 UC Santa Barbara to a single run on Saturday night at Goodwin Field, claiming a series win and moving two games ahead of the Gauchos in the race for first place in the Big West Conference.
Seven different batters drove in runs for the Titans (28-20, 13-4 Big West), who chipped away for four runs over the first three innings of the game before putting the contest away for good with a six-run outburst in the seventh inning.
Meanwhile, CSF right-handers Justin Garza and Miles Chambers (3-3) combined to keep the Gauchos (34-13-1, 11-6) off the board over their eight combined innings. Garza allowed two hits before exiting early in the fourth inning, then Chambers picked up the slack, allowing only a single hit in 4 2/3 innings to earn the win in the contest.
Sophomore lefty Justin Jacome took the loss for UCSB to move to 7-3 after allowing three earned runs off six hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings with four punchouts.
Tyler Steib went 3-4 out of the two-hole while driving in a pair of runs to do the most damage for the Titans. His bunt single in the second inning, aided by a UCSB throwing error, opened the scoring as part of a three-run rally which was capped off by a Josh Vargas RBI single.
David Olmedo-Barre popped a solo shot over the right-center field fence in the third to make it 4-0, then the Titans rapped out six runs in the seventh, with the most damage coming on Stieb's two-run double into right-center.
The Gauchos plated their sole run of the game in the ninth, as sophomore DH Paddy O'Brien skied a sacrifice fly into center field to score Austin Bush, who had grounded a single through the right side earlier in the frame.
UCSB will look to salvage a win in the series tomorrow afternoon, as sophomore righty Shane Bieber (6-3. 2.01 ERA) is scheduled to take the ball for the Gauchos. He will be opposed by CSF southpaw John Gavin (6-1, 3.79), with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
