Box Score FRESNO, Calif. - The lead changed hands 15 times, but when the ball left the hand of Drea Toler in the final moments remaining it changed for good.
The buzzer-beater capped a 10 point, three assist and two steal night, and sealed the 50-49 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
'It's been a long time. At the buzzer? Those are fun, it's a lot of fun,' said head coach Bonnie Henrickson.
"With nine seconds there's no play to run. You're just trying to drive and kick, and [Onome Jemerigbe] did a great job of keeping her dribble and Drea found a window to get rid of it."
UCSB knocked down seven of 14 three pointers, and shot 42.6 percent from the field to snap a five-game losing streak, and earn the Gauchos (3-7) their first road win of the season.
Sarah Porter and Coco Miller each added nine points, while Jemerigbe contributed eight points with three assists. Porter coralled four rebounds, while Miller dealt three assists. Drew Edelman equalled her season-high of seven rebounds, contributing five points.
In the first quarter neither team was able to build an advantage bigger than four points. A pair of Chaya Durr free-throws and a steal and layup by Toler gave the Gauchos their first lead of the game at the 5:24 mark. The teams traded the lead, then Jemerigbe knocked down the first of her two triples from the wing to give UCSB the 14-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
After giving up six of the first eight points in the second stanza, Porter knocked down back to back three-pointers to put the Gauchos back in front for the remainder of the half. She and Toler combined for all 12 of the UCSB points in the quarter, Toler's coming on a pair of slashes to the basket, and a steal and layup. Through the first half the Gauchos led 26-24.
The lead swelled as big as seven for UCSB in the third, with Miller scoring seven of her points in the quarter. The teams went 2:37 and 2:33 without scoring, before Fresno State started a run in the final two minutes to cut the lead to 38-36.
It set the stage for a fourth quarter where the teams where tied once, and traded the lead six times.
"Tremendous credit for them to hang in and hang in there. It was ugly, [Fresno] takes the lead, claw back and get the chance to be in position to hit one," Henrickson said.
UCSB travels to Edinburg, Texas for the the Battle on the Border tournament tomorrow. The Gauchos face the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders on Monday at 2:30 PM, and the North Dakota State University Bisons on Tuesday at 2:30 PM.
"For us to play two good teams on a neutral floor, and get on the road and travel. To travel like that on an extended trip, it's chemistry you're building, we watch film a bit more, that's good for us," said Henrickson.
