IRVINE, Calif.- The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (12-7) improved to 5-1 in the Big West as they defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters (3-14) on Saturday.
UCSB and UCI experienced three different rain delays during their match, but the Gauchos remained focus to take the win.
UCI jumped out to the early 1-0 lead as the Anteaters were able to clinch the doubles point behind wins at the number one and two positions. No. 15 Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic lost their third match of the season on court one, while Natalie Da Silveira and Jaimee Gilbertson got the lone doubles win for the Gauchos at the number three position.
The Gauchos were able to redeem their doubles play by taking five of the six singles matches. Amanda Atanasson led the charge with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Andrea Duva on court five. Stojic then gave the Gauchos the 2-1 lead as she defeated Taylor LeFridge 6-3, 6-0 on court three.
Gilbertson took down Mazy Watrous 6-1, 6-3 at the number four position and Da Silveira defeated Cassidy Branstine 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the win for the Gauchos.
Lou Adler gave the Gauchos their last point of the day with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Sarah Gong on court one.
Dubavets battled in her match but came up short in a third set tie breaker that took place at 1-1. The final score saw Vivien Dvali defeating Dubavets 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 1-1 (7-5) at the number two position.
The Gauchos will look to improve upon their impressive Big West record as they travel to Fullerton to take on Cal State Fullerton on Sunday April 10 at 11AM.
