MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – After one day of competition at the MPSF Championships, the UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swim teams are both tied with Hawaii for first place overall. On the women's side, BYU holds third place with 64 points, and UC San Diego's men sit in third with 68 points. The Gauchos won two event championships in the men's and women's 800Y Free Relays.
The men's squad is seeking its third MPSF Team Championship in the last three years (2017, 2018), while the women are looking for their first in program history.
Head Coach Matt Macedo was happy with the first days' result, saying "To have both the men and the women sitting in first place is a nice start to a long meet. The highlight of the night was our women's 800 Free Relay which broke the old school record by almost six seconds." He continued, "We are excited to see what we can do tomorrow."
In the women's 800Y Free Relay, the team made up of Zoe Cosgrove, Elena England, Emily Ward, and Emily Boggess finished in 7:10.16, crushing the previous school record, and winning the MPSF Championship for that event.
Then men also won the MPSF Championship in the 800Y Free, as the quartet of Kian Brouwer, Fischer Basham, Doug Nogueira, and Joe Lastelic finished in 6:25.21.
Earlier in the evening, Santa Barbara's women's 200Y Medley Relay team of Cosgrove, Quintana, Jacquelyn Harris, and Bryn McGowan finished second behind Hawaii by just .66 seconds.
Additionally, the men's 200Y Medley Relay squad of Justin Nguyen, Tony Moore, Jolen Griffin, and Riley Ferguson finished third, .07 seconds behind second-place UC San Diego and 1.84 seconds behind first-place Hawaii.
The Gauchos look to take sole possession of first place tomorrow as the meet continues, with prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m. and finals kicking off at 6:00 p.m. Click here for a schedule of events.
