MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's swim team won event championships in the 200Y Free Relay, 500Y Free, and 200Y IM on Thursday evening, the second day of the four-day MPSF Championship meet. Despite not taking first in any events, the women had a strong performance, picking up four top-five finishes.
Both teams entered the day tied for first place with Hawaii, but took a hit in the standings Thursday due to the lack of a diving team. The women sit in second place with 227 points, 37 points behind first-place Hawaii, while the men dropped to third place with 229 points, 63 points behind first-place Hawaii. Without diving, the women would be in first with a 23-point lead over Hawaii, while the men would be in second trailing Hawaii by just 18.
Seniors Doug Nogueira and Joe Lastelic both won individual championships. Nogueira finished the 200Y IM in 1:45.86, while Lastelic touched in the 500Y Free in 4:19.84, an event in which UCSB also received a third-place finish from freshman Dominic Falcon (4:21.39).
The 200Y Free Relay was the first event of the day and Kian Brouwer, Riley Ferguson, Christian Martinez, and Justin Nguyen finished first to beat a seven-year old MPSF all-time record (1:20.18). The women's squad of Emily Boggess, Lucy Fellner, Jacquelyn Harris, and Bryn McGowan finished second in the same event in 1:35.15.
Freshmen Zoe Cosgrove and Maelynn Lawrence both earned third-place wins, Cosgrove in the 200Y IM (1:59.70), and Lawrence in the 500Y Free (4:50.65). Senior Emily Boggess touched fourth in the 500Y Free (4:51.41).
