SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— For the second straight week No. 22 UCSB saw its series sweep opportunity squandered as host UC San Diego pulled out a 9-5 win in the final game of the weekend. The Gauchos held a late lead in the seventh, but a five-spot by the Tritons would grant them their sole win of the series.

Five different pitchers graced the mound for the Gauchos in the game including starter JD Callahan who tossed five innings of two-run ball. He allowed just one earned on six hits and struck out two.

Jordan Sprinkle followed up his career-best game last night with another gem this afternoon going 3-for-4 with a run, a double, and a walk. He extended his hit streak to 17 total games and remains tied with Zach Rodriguez for the most multi-hit games with 16.

UCSB struck first in the top of the second as Rodriguez stepped to the plate and did what he does best, send a bomb over the center-field wall to make it 1-0. It was his second home run of the series and sixth of the year. He finished the series 13 hits, 13 RBI, two homers, two doubles, and nine runs.

Unfortunately, the Tritons answered with a solo shot of their own in the bottom half to tie it 1-1.

The Gauchos got a bit of charity in the fifth inning with a runner reaching on an error and a run being scored on a balk to give them the lead 2-1. Jason Willow would make it 3-1 with an RBI single to right field.

Eight runs would come across in the next four innings for the host Tritons giving them a sizable enough lead to win their second straight Sunday game over one of the conference's top teams.

Rodriguez posted an RBI single to left and Nick Vogt cranked a solo shot in the top of the ninth to cut the lead to 9-5, but it was too little, too late for the visiting Gauchos.

UCSB will now look to keep its momentum going as the road trip continues down at Long Beach State next weekend.
