Box Score 2 LARAMIE, Wyom.— The UCSB Women's Volleyball team split its Friday doubleheader at the UniWyo Invite. The Gauchos began the day suffering their third straight five-set loss to host Wyoming but closed out the day on a high note earning their first sweep of the season over Missouri.
Match One: Wyoming 3, UCSB 2
ON THE STAT SHEET
- The Gauchos outblocked the third best blocking team in the nation 15-8
- Tallulah Froley had her best performance of the young season going 15-1-31 for a .452 hitting percentage
- Michelle Ohwobete had a career-high 16 kills
- Rowan Ennis fell a few touches short of a triple-double with nine kills, nine blocks, and eight digs
- Macall Peed started in at libero and led all players with 22 digs
- Grace Kloss (35) and Grace McIntosh (26) shared the setting responsibilities and combined for 61 assists
- Sophie Messinger came off the bench to post 10 digs, six kills, and three blocks
- UCSB out-hit the host Cowgirls .280 to .253
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- UCSB came out hot swinging a .444 clip and converting on 70% of its side out opportunities
- After taking a 5-4 lead the Gauchos never let up riding a 13-5 run to a 16-9 lead
- Ohwobete finished off the set with a kill and gave the Gauchos its largest lead of the frame at eight
Second Set
- UCSB posts a solid .393 hitting percentage but Wyoming sees its best mark of the match at .441 with 18 kills
- The Gauchos kept it close but after taking a 10-9 lead the Cowgirls never looked back
Third Set
- The set sees 16 ties and seven lead changes, most of the match
- Despite hitting a match-low .089 the Gauchos hang around to force extra points and even held set-point at 26-25
- Ennis finds three kills, three blocks, and two digs
Fourth Set
- Set four saw 10 ties and four lead changes
- Ohwobete notches 5 of her 16 kills and comes through on all 10 reception opportunities
- The Gauchos hold Wyoming to a match-low .133 hitting percentage
- UCSB ends the set on a 4-0 run capped off by a block from Froley and Messinger
Fifth Set
- UCSB saw its fifth five-set loss
- The Cowgirls led from 6-5 on but the Gauchos fought to tie it at 11-11 and 12-12
- Up 14-13 the Cowgirls converted on a side out chance to take the match
Match Two: UCSB 3, Missouri 0
ON THE STAT SHEET
- Froley led the way with 14 kills on a .310 hitting percentage and added three digs
- Kloss les all players with 27 assists, McIntosh saw 15, and Peed added eight
- Peed led all players with 17 digs
- Ohwobete sent down 12 more kills and has now had double-digits in four straight matches
- Ennis paired three solo blocks and five total with nine more kills
- UCSB held Missouri to a .151 hitting percentage
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, but the Gauchos fought back to tie it at 11-11
- From there the Gauchos found their rhythm and traded punches with Missouri until the two met at 20-20
- A pair of kills from Froley and a trio of Tigers miscues gave UCSB a 5-2 run to finish the set and give UCSB its fifth first-set win of the season
Second Set
- Neither team took more than two-point lead until the Tigers took a 14-11 lead
- From there the Gauchos went on a 8-2 run to take a late lead at 19-16
- Ennis, Froley, and Ohwobete notched late kills t give UCSB to 2-0 advantage
- Ennis and Froley both saw five kills and Ohwobete scored four
Third Set
- The third and final set saw 15 ties, seven lead changes, and two set points for Missouri
- Six different Gauchos posted multi-kill efforts
- UCSB trailed by as much as three but battled back to tie it at 20-20
- Down 24-22 the Gauchos tied it on the back of an Ohwobete kill and a McIntosh ace
- Back-to-back kills by Deni Wilson sealed the set and the first sweep of the season
