No. 20 Gauchos Top Nevada 12-6 to Take Series

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- After dropping a tough matchup last night, No. 20 UCSB Baseball went out and claimed the series in a convincing way Sunday afternoon defeating Nevada 12-6. The Gauchos' offense continues to shine as they put up 11+ runs on all three teams they have played so far this season.

On the Stat Sheet

  • For the second time in as many series, UCSB's offense showed out in a Sunday rubber match collecting 15 hits, five of which went for extra bases. The team also had 11 RBI spread out amongst seven different batters.
  • Leo Mosby had a terrific outing going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI as the Gauchos' DH for the day.
  • Jordan Sprinkle had a pair of doubles and Christian Kirtley kept his hot streak alive going 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Earning his second career start was freshman Ryan Gallagher who had an incredible performance in his debut at Caesar Uyesaka. He tossed 5.2 innings and allowed just one earned while striking out six to pick up his first collegiate win.
  • Kyle Johnson went 1-for-2 on the day with three walks continuing his on-base streak that began on opening day.
  • Jason Willow extended his hit streak to 14 games with a single in the second.

How It Happened

  • Gallagher got going early collecting two Ks in the top of the first on two tough off-speed balls and retiring all three batters in order to bring the Gauchos in to bat
  • That may have been a mistake for Gallagher who then had to sit and watch as his teammates batted around to chase out the Wolfpack starter on their way to a seven-run start. Broc Mortensen, Mosby, and Zander Darby all notched RBI singles and John Newman Jr. broke the game wide open with a bases-loaded 3 RBI triple. Sprinkle then drove in the Gaucho catcher on an RBI double to make it 7-0.
  • Sprinkle and Willow drove in two more in the bottom of the 2nd to give their team an early 9-0 lead.
  • Nevada finally awoke in the fourth to respond with a run, but UCSB was quick to get it back as Bryce Willits singled to right center to drive in Nick Oakley and go up 10-1.
  • A Wolfpack run in the top of the sixth ended Gallagher's night and brought in Michael Rice who tossed 1.1 innings of hitless ball striking out two.
  • The 11th run of the night came in the bottom of the seventh as Johnson scored on an error and Mosby brought in the pinch-running Steele Ledford extending the lead to 12-2.
  • The Wolfpack began its comeback in the final two innings and threatened to do more damage but UCSB turned a timely double play in the 8th to take the wind out of their sails. Nevada scored four runs to make the final score 12-6.
