How It Happened

  • This game got broken open early as the Gauchos hung a five in the bottom of the second despite every run coming in with two outs. Jordan Sprinkle kept his hot weekend going as he stepped to the plate with runners on the corners doubled down the right line to score the first run. Broc Mortensen touched home on a wild pitch and Nick Oakley singled up the middle to score Sprinkle. Then it was Klassen hitting a two-run bomb to get UCSB out to a 5-0 lead.
  • The bottom of the third saw the Gauchos extend that lead to 7-0 as Vogt went oppo for a solo homer and John Newman Jr. scored on a wild pitch after doubling and moving to third on a tag up.
  • With Kirtley aboard on a leadoff single  in the fifth came Johnson who smoked a ball over the right field wall and make it a 9-0 game and Kirtley made it 10-0 with an RBI single to left that scored Willits.
  • UCSB nearly had the shutout but Long Beach got its first and only run in the top of the ninth.
