FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – UC Santa Barbara track and field had three members from the men's side represent the team for day one of the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries on Wednesday at the University of Arkansas. All three Gauchos would improve upon the rankings they held coming into the competition, placing higher than their pre-meet standings.
"This was a special group," UCSB track and field director Cody Fleming said. "They're all Big West Champions and have been a core part of our team for the last five-plus years."

Chase Tarr - Javelin
Pre-Meet Rank: 22
Regional Finish: 14
UCSB's highest finish of the day came from graduate student Chase Tarr in the men's javelin. Competing at regionals for the third time in his Gaucho career, the Marysville, Calif. native had the 14th-best mark at the competition with a 66.38m throw on his second attempt – just 0.25 off his best mark of the year when he claimed silver at the Big West Championships.
"Chase came on late and peaked at the right time. He had a good series of 66m throws at conference then came and threw 66m again in Arkansas. We're fortunate he has another year left as he finishes his masters degree in Environmental Science through the Bren School." – Fleming
Nick Randazzo - 10k
Pre-Meet Rank: 40
Regional Finish: 33
Less than two weeks after his individual championship in the conference steeplechase, Randazzo competed in the men's 10k, an event he also won at the Big West Championships in 2019. The former Ventura High School star wasn't able to match his time of 28:52.01 at the Stanford Invite in April, a mark which landed at No. 2 all-time in Gaucho history. Randazzo would be the 33rd person to cross the finish line with a 29:40.15 time.
"Nick has accomplished just about everything up to this point- multiple time conference champion, NCAA Cross Country qualifier, all over our top-ten lists. It was great to have him experience this to cap an amazing career as a Gaucho." – Fleming
Jarett Chinn - 800m
Pre-Meet Rank: 41
Regional Finish: 32
Big West silver medalist Jarett Chinn ran in the NCAA Regionals men's 800m for the second time in his career on Wednesday. He finished with the 32nd-best overall time at 1:50.18, just shy of his season-best 1:49.66 from the conference championships.
"For Jarett this was full circle. He made the Regional meet as a freshman then battled injuries, learned what he needed to do to stay healthy then finished this year with a lifetime best 1:49.66 at conference to get back here." – Fleming
