Box Score SAN DIEGO- Amelia Honer took home the ITA Southwest Regional Championship trophy in singles on Tuesday afternoon taking down the No. 8 player in the national rankings. With her semifinal win, Honer punched her ticket to the NCAA Women's Singles Championship next month. Ten UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis players in total traveled to San Diego to compete.
SINGLES COMPETITION
Three Gauchos earned spots in the main draw opening round on Friday.
Amelia Honer won in straight sets for six consecutive matches to reach the championship. In the round of 64, she took a 6-2, 6-1 win followed by a 6-2, 6-3 win in the round of 32. Honer got another 6-1, 6-2 win in a dominant performance over San Diego, clinching a spot in the quarterfinals. The momentum did not stop there. Honer won 6-4, 6-0 the next day. She faced the No. 6 seed in the semifinals winning 6-2, 6-3. With the win, she clinched her spot in the NCAA Championship in Waco in November. The hard work did not end there. Honer secured the championship title in a 6-2, 6-2 win over the No. 8 player on Tuesday afternoon.
Lucy Lu would not advance to the round of 32 after a tight 3-6, 6-3, 5-7 loss to Arizona in the opening round.
Ali Benedetto also had a 6-0, 6-1 loss in the round of 64.
In the qualifying round,
Raphaelle Leroux took a 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 win. She got one set on Arizona in the following match but was unable to advance to the main draw, losing 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
Carla Pacot and
Katarina Vayser did not appear in the main draw following 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 and 6-3, 7-6(2) losses in the qualifying bracket, respectively.
Lily Pradkin and
Emma Tutoveanu each forced a third set in the qualifiers. Pradkin's match ultimately ended in a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 loss. Tutoveanu also took a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 loss.
The Blue and Gold took away wins in the following extra consolation matches. Gauchos appeared in four matches on Friday, six on Saturday and seven on Sunday.
Pradkin, Tutoveanu and Pacot all had wins in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-1 performance, 6-1, 6-2 win and 6-1, 7-6(3) victory, respectively. Vayser battled to a tiebreak for the match but fell 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.
On Saturday, LeRoux earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over UC San Diego. Benedetto also battled for a win in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.
Pradkin kept her straight set streak with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Pacot was unable to find a win against Cal Poly with a 6-2, 6-2 final score. Vayser once again went to a tiebreak in her second consolation match and walked away with a 6-1, 6(6)-7, 10-2 win this time. Tutoveanu won her second consecutive match 7-6(4), 6-2.
LeRoux fell 6-2, 6-3 to Arizona to open Sunday's additional competition. Benedetto took another win in the tiebreak of her last match of the tournament 6-4, 2-6, 11-9. Weissheim earned a similar win with a 7-6(1), 4-6, 10-8 result. Pradkin's match went to a tiebreak where she was defeated 3-6, 6-0, 10-6. Tutoveanu also lost in a close tiebreak 6-0, 1-6, 10-8. Vayser and Pacot fell in straight sets with a 7-6(5), 6-0 and 6-0, 7-6(1) result, respectively.
DOUBLES COMPETITION
Pradkin and Lu had an impressive 8-0 win in their opening match. They fell 8-2 to the No. 3 seed in the round of 32.
LeRoux and Benedetto took on Hawaii in the round of 64 with an 8-5 victory. They would drop to the No.1 seed in the following round 8-3. Tutoveanu and Pacot did not advance after an 8-1 defeat in the round of 32.
Honer and Weissheim, No. 35 in ITA standings, got a first round bye followed by an 8-5 loss on Saturday to Loyola Marymount.
Four pairs played extra doubles matches on Sunday, securing two wins. LeRoux and Pradkin took a 6-2 win. Benedetto and Lu also had a dominant 6-3 win over Hawai'i. Tutoveanu teamed up with Weissheim but they were unable to secure the win with a 6-3 loss to CSUN. Pacot and Vayser also fell 6-3 in their extra match.
UP NEXT
The Gauchos will travel to USC for the Dennis Rizza Classic in two weeks. The competition will begin on Friday, Nov. 1 and run through Sunday, Nov. 3.
