Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES- UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis split the squad this weekend to compete in the Women of Troy Invite at USC and the Beach Fall Tennis Tournament at Long Beach State.
Raphaelle Leroux had a dominant first time out as a Gaucho making it to the singles championship in Long Beach. Tyra Richardson appeared in the singles quarterfinals while Lucy Lu appeared in the doubles quarterfinals with Leroux. Ali Benedetto and Marie Weissheim had a great run at USC competing in the doubles championship and each finding singles wins.Â
WOMEN OF TROYÂ
SINGLES COMPETITIONÂ
Both Ali Benedetto and Marie Weissheim started the weekend off strong with Friday wins. Benedetto won her first match in a third set tiebreak 6-1, 3-6, 10-5. She went on to take her Saturday match as well in straight sets before falling in the Sunday bracket 4-6, 4-6. Weissheim took her first match 6-2, 6-3. In an extremely tight Saturday match, she was ultimately unable to take the third set tiebreak in a 2-6, 6-2, 9-11 loss. Â
DOUBLES COMPETITIONÂ
Benedetto and Weissheim defeated BYU on Friday to kick off a successful doubles run. They came out on top again on Saturday against Wisconsin in a 6-3 set. Their run came to a close on Sunday in the doubles championship against USC with a 6-0 loss.Â
BEACH FALL TENNIS TOURNAMENTÂ
SINGLES COMPETITIONÂ
Raphaelle Leroux, in her first tournament for Santa Barbara, won five straight matches to appear in the championship final on Sunday. She won in straight sets for both of her Thursday matches. After losing the tiebreak for the first set, she took the following two sets for a 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-0 win. In the quarterfinals, she secured a 6-3,7-5 win. Leroux then went up against Cal Poly's Peyton Dunkle in the semifinals in a hard-fought battle winning 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. During Sunday's championship final, Leroux faced UC San Diego's Julia Haynes losing 6-2, 6-4 thus wrapping up a successful first collegiate tournament for the freshman. Â
Tyra Richardson got three wins on the weekend, all in straight sets. She dominated in both of her Thursday opening matches with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the round of 64 and a 6-1, 6-1 win in the round of 32. Her two matches on Friday saw a 6-3, 6-2 win before losing in the quarterfinals. Â
Lily Pradkin won her first two matches as a Gaucho 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. She appeared in the round of 16 on Saturday where her singles appearance came to a close. She picked up a 3-6,6-0,10-3 win in the consolation round. Â
Emma Tutoveanu had her first appearance with the Santa Barbara team winning her first match 6-0, 6-4. Although she did not make it to the next round, she picked up two more wins in the consolation matches with a 6-0, 6-3 win on Friday and 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 third set tiebreak win on Saturday. Â
Katarina Vayser, Lucy Lu, and Carla Pacot also appeared in the singles draw but were unable to secure spots in the round of 32. Pacot and Vayser found great wins in the consolation matches. Pacot won in straight sets in both of her subsequent matches. Vayser did the same in her Friday match with a 7-6(3), 6-1 win. Â
DOUBLES COMPETITIONÂ
Leroux and Lu had a strong start to the doubles season with a 8-6 win on Friday and 8-5 win on Saturday, but they did not advance to the semifinals. Â
Pacot and Pradkin had a dominant 8-1 win on Friday but fell to Cal Poly in the round of 16. Pradkin and Richardson found success in the extra doubles matches with a 6-4 win on Saturday and 6-2 win on Sunday. Tutoveanu and Pacot earned a 6-3 win on Saturday as well. Â
