SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Track and Field competed at the BIg West Championships this weekend, where they set two new school records and a dozen more personal records. On the conference stage, the Gauchos pushed their limits and ended their season with success.
Eitan Goore became the Big West Champion in the Pole Vault, jumping 0.23m further than second place. His height of 5.50m now stands as the UC Santa Barbara record in the event, having broken the previous record (which he set this year) by 10cm today.
Kennedy Johnson once again set the school Triple Jump record, using her final jump to make it 4 cm further than her previous school and personal best. She has broken and set the record three times this year and placed second in the conference in the event.
Malia Benson placed second in the Big West in the Javelin, earning her spot with a throw of 46.61m.
Abigail Monti had a great weekend, setting a personal best in the 400m Hurdles qualifying and breaking it in the finals, where she placed third with a new best of 1:01.30. Alison Tjoe also set a new personal record in qualifying and broke it during the finals, where she placed fourth with her new best of 1:01.44. Jessica Swalve ran the 400m Hurdles for the first time ever this weekend and she impressively made it to the finals.
Tyler Holl had a standout meet, also placing third in the 400m Hurdles finals, where he set a new PR of 51.89s. Holl also qualified for the 110m Hurdles finals, during which he set a personal record of 14.18s. Finn Andrews also set new personal bests in the 110m Hurdles and the 400m Hurdles finals, with times of 14.44s and 53.63s, respectively. Matthew Molina and Dario Rock also set new personal bests in the 110m Hurdles finals, with times of 14.27 and 14.18
Stina Johansson placed third in the conference in the 3K Steeplechase, coming across the line with 10:46.26 in the first race of the meet. Aoife Hernon set a new personal best in the 400m finals, setting it at 55.31 and placing fourth in the Big West in the event. Matt Staples set personal records in two events, 10.54s in the 100m and 21.44 in the 200m finals.
Parker Simmons and Noah de la Rionda each secured personal bests in two events. Simmons had times of 9:04.20 in the 3K steeplechase, where he placed fourth, and 14:44.87 in the 5000m. De la Rionda also PR'd in the 5000m, with a time of 14:51.11 as well as a PR in the 1500 with 3:54.27. Leah Mendibles had a personal record of 4:43.24 in the 1500m as well.
The women's 4x100 relay had their season best, with a time of 46.26 run by Sophia Pardo, Aoife Hernon, Emma Barthel, and Amor Jones. The men's 4x100 also had their season best, with a 41.46 run by Finn Andrews, Matthew Staples, Dario Rock, and Sean Beihoffer.
Dylan Manning qualified for the 800m finals and placed 7th in the conference, while Travis Bryson placed 10th in the conference after the 1500m finals.
Emma Barthel placed sixth out of 23 in the long jump with a mark of 5.85m. Jeramiah Havens hurled a personal best of 57.15 in the Javelin, and Savannah Mbamo threw a personal best of 42.48 in the discus.
Qualifying athletes will compete at the NCAA West Regionals hosted by the University of Arkansas on May 22-25.
