STILLWATER, Okla. – UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis student-athlete,
Amelia Honer, continues on to the Quarterfinal Round of the NCAA Singles National Championships after a gutsy comeback victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The opening set started as a back-and-forth affair as the two split the first four games. It would stay tied as they would split the following four as well. With the match all square at four games apiece the 37
th-ranked Garcia Ruiz won the next two to secure the set victory.
The second match started much like the first as the two sides traded games and were tied at four aside. Garcia Ruiz got the upper hand with a game-win to take a 5-4 lead. Honer did not fret as she proceeded to win the next three games and win set two, 7-5.
As the match moved to the third set, Honer gained an early edge winning three of the first four games. Garcia Ruiz came back though and would tie the game at three games aside. After trading the next two games Honer was able to emerge victorious winning the next two games to earn a 6-4 set three victory.
This is the first time in UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis history that an individual has reached the National Quarterfinal round in NCAA Singles Championships. Honer now advances to the Quarterfinal Round of the NCAA Singles Tournament where she will play No. 1-ranked Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M. Match time is still yet to be determined.
