STILLWATER, Okla. – The doubles pairing of
Amelia Honer and
Kira Reuter of the UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team came up just short in their Round of 16 match against the No. 3 ranked duo Wednesday afternoon.
The Gauchos got out to a quick 4-2 advantage in the opening set, but after gaining the lead the Oklahoma State duo won three straight games to take a 5-4 lead. Honer and Reuter would even it up at five but the Cowgirls won the next to to take the opening set.
Again, Honer and Reuter got out to an early lead, this time up 4-3. Oklahoma State knotted it up at four games aside. The Gauchos were able to bear down and win the next two games in dominant fashion to even up the match.
In the final set, the Cowgirls got out to a quick 4-1 advantage before the Gauchos put the pressure on and drew within one. Unfortunately, that momentum did not last long as the Oklahoma State pairing won the next four points to take an 8-3 lead. UC Santa Barbara then went on a run of their own to pull within two and make the set 8-6. It was too little too late though as the Cowgirls won the next two points and took the match.
The loss brings the doubles season to a close for the pairing. Honer and Reuter become just the fifth doubles pairing to reach the Round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles National Championships.
