TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2024 Division I Women's National Awards have been announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Thursday morning. UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis star, Amelia Honer was named the National Player to Watch. Along with earning National Player to Watch she was also named the Southwest Region Player to Watch.
"We are grateful and honored Amelia Honer has been recognized by coaches across the country as the ITA National Player to Watch for this 2023-24 season," said Head Coach Simon Thibodeau. "Our entire UC Santa Barbara community is extremely proud of her for this amazing accomplishment."
Following her third season in the Blue and Gold Honer has complied a career 75-20 record in singles and a 59-27 doubles competition and has ranked as high as No. 29 in singles and No. 13 in doubles. She has been recognized twice as The Big West Player of the Year and The Big West Player of the Week 12 times over three seasons. She is just two weekly awards away from earning the most in a career. Additionally she is a three time First Team All-Big West selection in doubles and a two time First Team All-Big West selection in singles.
The Newtown, Pa. native has earned countless remarkable victories over her career including a total of nine ranked opponents across singles and doubles during the 2024 season, beat the No. 1 player in the country at the ITA Southwest Regional and came up big to clinch the match against No. 24 Stanford in 2022 as a freshman. Over the last two seasons she has earned an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Singles and Doubles National Championships.
"Amelia is entirely deserving as she continues to reach new heights and establish high goals and standards for herself and our program," Thibodeau continued. "Thank you to the ITA and the Regional Coaches committee for highlighting Amelia as one of the best players in the country, where she belongs."
