Youri Makes Strong Run at ITA Southwest Regional

Box Score SAN DIEGO – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team traveled south to compete in the ITA Southwest Regional event over the weekend. Ekua Youri was impressive advancing to the round of 16 in singles while all doubles pairing advanced out of the first round.
 
THURSDAY
During the opening day of the event, four student-athletes competed in the qualifying round in hopes of earning a spot in the main draw. Emma Tutoveanu won both her matches in straight sets and all by score of 6-1. Lily Pradkin won her opening round match handily, 6-2, 6-1 but fell just short in a three-set battle, 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.
 
FRIDAY
Friday was a long day of tennis for the Gauchos competing in both doubles and singles play. All four doubles pairings won their opening match in the event. Ekua Youri and Emma Tutoveanu won their match 8-4, before Carla Pacot and Katrina Vayser won their match 8-6. Shachf Lieberman and Lily Pradkin kept the momentum going with an 8-5 victory and Raphaelle Leroux and My-Anh Holmes finished off a perfect opening round with a tight 8-7 (5) victory.
 
During singles play Tutoveanu continued her impressive tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 victory, Youri was the only other Gaucho to advance out of the main draw opening round with a 6-4, 6-2 win. Unfortunately, Tutoveanu's run came to a close in the round of 32 after falling to Arizona State in three sets. Youri defeated Jayna Clemens from San Diego State in a tight three set victory to advance to the round of 16.
 
SATURDAY
Despite winning all its opening round matches, all the pairing fell in the second round of the tournament ending their run. The Gauchos tournament wrapped up after Youri fell in the singles round of 16, 6-2, 6-3.
 
UP NEXT
The Gauchos will have next weekend off before returning to action on Oct. 31 as they split squad at the Arizona State Thunderbird Classic and the Dennis Rizza Classic in Palos Verdes, Calif.
