Honer, Weissheim Win ITA All-American Championships Consolation Title

CARY, N.C. - Despite dropping their opening round of the main draw, Gauchos battled back in the consolation bracket, winning five straight doubles matches, to bring some hardware back to Santa Barbara.

SINGLES COMPETITION
Amelia Honer appeared in ten matches in five days, first in the round of 64 facing Florida International's Oyinlomo Quadre. Honer took the first set in a 7-4 tiebreak, but Quadre forced a third set where the two exchanged games. Ultimately, Honer was unable to find the third set win for a final score of 7-6, 2-6, 4-6.

In the consolation bracket, Honer dominated for a qualifying win of 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday and 6-3, 6-0 on Friday. Her 7-5, 6-3 win on Saturday landed her in the consolation quarterfinals the same afternoon. Honer's consolation run came to a close in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 1-6, 5-7 loss against the No.1-ranked player in the country. In all Honer earned three ranked wins on the weekend.

DOUBLES COMPETITION
Amelia Honer and Marie Weissheim came up short against the University of Virginia in the round of 32 falling 6-2, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, the pair battled for two wins that ended in a third set tiebreak. The round of 16 matchup against Penn ended in a 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 win similar to the following quarterfinal win of 7-6, 5-7, 10-3 against UCLA to send Honer and Weissheim to the semifinals.

In the Saturday semifinals against Wisconsin, the pair fell in the first set in a tiebreak, but came back in the second to force a third set tiebreak where they ultimately won 6-7, 6-3, 10-7. In the finals on Sunday, Honer and Weissheim defeated Oklahoma in a 6-2, 6-4 win to take the consolation championship.

UP NEXT
Numerous Gauchos will be in action next week. Katarina Vayser, Lucy Lu, Tyra Richardson, Carla Pacot, Emma Tutoveanu, Raphaelle Leroux, Lily Pradkin will all attend The Big West Individual Championships in Long Beach. Marie Weissheim and Ali Benedetto will travel to USC to compete in the Women of Troy Invite.
