SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – True freshman outside hitter Gabi Martinez wasted no time making her mark on the Big West Conference, earning Freshman of the Week honors after leading the Gauchos to a 2-0 weekend. Martinez became the first Gaucho this season to receive the conference's top weekly award.
Martinez delivered a career-best performance in the Gauchos' sweep of CSUN, opening the weekend with 19 kills, clearing her previous career-high by eight. The Katy, Texas native led Santa Barbara, who is first in kills and kills per set for the conference. Over the course of the weekend, she racked up 30 total–a full 10 more than the next highest. She averaged an impressive 4.29 kills per set while maintaining a .344 hitting percentage.
Martinez and the Gauchos will head south to continue Big West competition this Friday, October 3rd, to face Long Beach. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
