UCSB Men and Women Sweep Cal Poly at Home

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The rain held off for the first co-ed duel meet of the season between UCSB and Cal Poly. The Gauchos emerged victorious for both the men's and women's teams, with the men winning 168-109, and the women winning 150-144, for an overall score of 318-253.

The women began the meet with a one-two win in the 200 medley relay. The "B" team consisting of Elizabeth Pulido, Carissa Metcalf, Jamie Dang, and Kimmie Kreuzberger pulled ahead of the "A" team, consisting of Julia Mikota, Katie Records, Allie Stevens, and Lauren Vosseler with strong swims from Dang and Kreuzberger.

The UCSB men also began the meet with a first place finish (1:33.35) in the 200 medley relay, led by Mickey Mowry, Andy Castilleja, Yoessef Tibazi, and Lukas Paulauskas.

The women continued the one-two win pattern with a first place finish in the 1650 freestyle by Reid Whaley (17:34.15), followed by Annie Larsen (17:41.65) in second.

Senior Andrew Barmann (15:59.72) finished just under 16 minutes for a win in the 1650 freestyle. 

Clayton Young (1:42.09), Eddie Sanchez (1:42.46), and Lukas Paulauskas (1:42.63) earned the top three times in the 200 freestyle, scoring 16 points in that event alone.

Dylan Kubick (51.74) and Billy Mullis (51.79) would go on to take first and second in the 100 backstroke.

UCSB's strong female breaststrokers, Charis Hoppe (1:05.24), Katie Records (1:05.29), and Carissa Metcalf (1:05.64) finished first, second, and third in a tight race for the 100 breaststroke.

Andy Castilleja (57.19) went on to take first in the men's 100 breaststroke, as well as the men's 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:06.88.

In the 200 butterfly, UCSB's signature butterflier Mickey Mowry (1:48.96) took first, with Chris Nolan (1:51.51) following in second.

UCSB's sprinters proved to be a tough match for Cal Poly, with the women finishing first, second, and third, and the men finishing first and second. Lauren Vosseler (23.98), Kimmie Kreuzberger (24.48), Charis Hoppe (24.77), Wade Allen (21.20), and Mikey Forbes (21.51) scored a total of 29 points for the Gauchos in the 50 freestyle.

In the 100 freestyle, Kimmie Kreuzberger (52.40), Hope Curran (53.19), and Hollace Barden (53.29) took first through third. 

The men would one-up the women in the 100 freestyle with a first through fourth place finish. Wade Allen (45.68) finished first, followed by Mikey Forbes (47.10), Lukas Paulauskas (47.10), and Chris Dotson (47.25). 

Billy Mullis (1:51.96) and Dylan Kubick (1:52.38) took one-two in the 200 backstroke.

Senior captain Heren Alanis won the 500 freestyle in 5:03.43, earning nine points for the Gaucho women.

Mickey Mowry (49.98) and Wade Allen (50.35) finished first and second in the 100 butterfly.

Coming back from a 15-point deficit, the women went on to take first through third in the 400 IM. Heren Alanis (4:27.35) finished first, followed by Alyssa Shew (4:31.62) and Annie Larsen (4:35.62). 

In the men's 400 IM, Dylan Kubick (4:01.61) out-touched Cal Poly's Mickey Mackle (4:01.62) by one one-hundredth of a second for the first place finish.

The Gaucho women would go on to score first and second in the 400 freestyle relay to secure a win over the Mustangs. 

Soon after, the Gaucho men took first through third in the 400 free relay.

The UCSB Men's and Women's swim teams will be back at Campus Pool next Friday, Nov. 7 for a duel meet against UC San Diego.
