UCSB Men Emerge Victorious over UNLV, Women Fall in a Narrow Defeat

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The UCSB men's and women's swimming teams left the beautiful Santa Barbara weather this weekend to take on the swim team of UNLV in a tight match that resulted in a win for the Gaucho men. Strong swims in the distance and breaststroke events put the men up over UNLV 151.5-110.5, with the women narrowly missing the win over the Rebels, scoring 128-134.

The relays proved to be a tough match for the Gauchos versus the Rebels, with both the men's and women's top two relay teams taking second and third in the 200 medley relay behind UNLV. The Gaucho women quickly redeemed themselves with a strong win in the 1000 freestyle by Reid Whaley (10:28.48).

Dylan Kubick (1:40.93) touched first in the 200 freestyle for the Gaucho men's first win of the day.

The next Gaucho victory featured a 1-2-3 win in the women's 100 breaststroke, with Katie Records (1:04.91) touching first, followed by Jiana Vargem (1:05.68) and Charis Hoppe (1:05.92).

Andy Castilleja found wins in his two signature events, winning the 100 breaststroke decidedly, out-touching his opponent by over two seconds with a time of 55.81, and later on in the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:03.33.

Mickey Mowry followed later on in the meet with a victory in the 200 butterfly, coming in at a time of 1:47.98.

Lauren Vosseler took second in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, with times of 24.06 and 52.35. Wade Allen followed suit in the men's 50 and 100 freestyle, finishing at a time of 20.79 in the 50 and 46.01 in the 100.

Billy Mullis blew the entire field away with his four-second margin win in the men's 200 backstroke, coming in at a time of 1:50.97.

In the women's 200 breaststroke Katie Records led a 1-2-3 Gaucho victory once again, finishing first with a time of 2:20.38. Jiana Vargem (2:21.43) followed closely in second, followed by Alyssa Shew (2:22.01) in third.

UCSB's notable distance swimmers Heren Alanis (5:06.25) and Matt Drum (4:40.33) both took first in their 500 freestyle events.

Yoessef Tibazi took first in the men's 100 butterfly, with a time of 48.94.

Following his victory Katie Records (2:05.98) took home her third win of the day in the 200 IM. The men's 200 IM featured a second win by Dylan Kubick (1:52.25), who was closely trailed by Eddie Sanchez (1:54.15), coming in at second.
