SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara men's tennis evened up their record at 2-2 with a victory against San Diego State (3-2) on Sunday in front of a rowdy Gaucho crowd. The Gauchos clinched the doubles point for the first time this season and won four of their six singles matches en route to the 5-2 decision.
The UCSB men kicked off the day with a victory in the doubles competition to open up to a 1-0 lead.
Nathan Eshmade and
Chase Masciorini were first off the courts with a quick 6-1 win against Goles-Babic/Meinzer. SDSU answered back with a victory at the No. 1 court, but the Gauchos were able to close out the doubles point at the No. 3 position, where
Morgan Mays and
Andrew Riminton battled to a 6-4 win.
The Gauchos extended their lead to 2-0 after freshman
Cody Rakela defeated the Aztecs' Marko Goles-Babic 6-3, 6-3 for his second straight victory.
After dropping a match at court 4, UCSB won the next two matches to clinch the match at 4-1. Sophomore
Morgan Mays continued his dominant play with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Thorsten Bertsch at the No. 1 position. Junior
Nathan Eshmade had the clinching victory in a three set battle at the No. 5 court, defeating Milen Ianakiev 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Play continued after the Gauchos won the match and UCSB went on to win another match at court 6, where sophomore
Teague Hamilton beat Jonas Meinzer 6-0, 7-6 to make the score 5-2.
The Gauchos will be back in action next week when they travel to #37 University of San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1:30 pm. On Sunday, the Gauchos will continue their road trip to face UC Irvine in their first conference match of the season. Play is set to begin at 12:00 pm on Sunday, Feb. 8.
