Box Score NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Led by Rown Ennis's career night, the UCSB (10-5, 1-1) women's volleyball team took its first road win in conference play with a 3-1 decision over CSUN (6-9. 2-1) on Friday night in the Matadome.
"We showed a lot of character tonight by just fighting until the end of every set and embracing any situation we were in, including the need to come back," head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. "We passed well enough to have a very good distribution from Hannah, which helped us balance our offense."
Hannah Juley finished the night with 45 assists, as she helped the team hit at a .238 clip.
Ennis finished with career-highs of 17 kills and a .448 hitting percentage, while Chanel Hoffman was behind her with 14 kills and a solid .344 hitting clip.
"Rowan worked really hard to be available and that paid off greatly," Welch said. "She was huge for us."
Not to be overlooked, Phoebe Grunt also finished with 11 kills and a .370 clip, as she also led the Gauchos with five total blocks.
On defense, Emilia Petrachi stepped up with her third 20-plus dig performance with 22 scoops against the Matadors, which stands as one of her best performances of the year with a 5.5 digs per set average.
The Gauchos took the first set with a solid decision after finishing the game on a 10-1 run. The team was facing a 17-15 CSUN lead, but a Megan Rice kill brought the momentum back UCSB's way as the team rattled off four-straight kills. While the Matadors were able to tie the score again at 18-18, it was not enough to slow the Gauchos downs as they finished the set with seven-straight points. During that stretch, Hannah Juley and Grunt combined for a pair of blocks while Maxine Burke dealt two service aces, including one for set-point.
In the second set, the Matadors held a 19-17 lead, but the Gauchos made sure they would reach the 20-point mark first with three kills, two coming from Ennis. Topped off by a Lexi Rottman ace, the Gauchos garnered a 21-19 lead and never looked back. While the Matadors made it interesting after cutting UCSB's lead down to 23-22, the Gauchos were able to pull off the set win thanks to a CSUN service service error followed by a Grunt kill.
CSUN was able to answer back with a 25-21 victory in the third set, but the Gauchos were able to lock up the road win in the fourth thanks to Ennis who went ballistic with eight kills, including the final three to seal the UCSB victory. The Matadors kept it close early with a 15-15 score, but a Hoffman kill triggered a 4-1 Gaucho run that set her team up for the win. From there, the Matadors were unable to threaten UCSB's lead, as they remained behind by at least three points.
UCSB will look to continue their road success at Long Beach State tomorrow night on ESPN3. The broadcast will be featured on the WatchESPN app and can also be accessed here.
