SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In the penultimate home game of the regular season, the No. 17 UC Santa Barbara water polo team took on No. 5 Hawai'i and fell to the Rainbow Wahine 11-4 at Campus Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Facing a formidable Hawai'i team that has only lost to USC, Cal and UCLA, three of the four teams ranked ahead of the Rainbow Wahine, the Gauchos got off to a quick start with an early goal in the first period.
After a standout four-goal game against CSUN last week, including a hat-trick in the first period, Sarah Snyder struck early once again with a goal on an assist from Natalie Selin.
Hawai'i responded with a goal on its next possession to tie the score at 1-1 and added two more in the period to take a 3-1 lead.
In the second, Chloe Barr scored twice for the Rainbow Wahine to put Hawai'i ahead 5-1 heading into the break.
On the first possession in the second half, Sarah Kreiser found the back of the cage and later in the period assisted on a Mollie Simmons goal that the freshman threaded through three defenders for the score.
Emily Martin capped off the scoring for the Gauchos with a goal late in the fourth period after Amelia Meckelborg found her with position in front of the cage.
The Rainbow Wahine, however, outscored UCSB 6-3 in the second half to hold on for the 11-4 win.
Kenzi Snyder and Becca Buck each tallied four saves after splitting time in the goal.
Chloe Barr finished with a game-high five goals to lead Hawai'i.
UCSB concludes the regular season tomorrow at Campus Pool against No. 8 UC Davis at 12:00 p.m. Senior Annie Mortimer will be recognized prior to the game.
