No. 30 Gauchos Shutout No. 25 Oregon State to Earn Sixth Straight Win

Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore.— The No. 30 Gauchos (11-2) earned their sixth straight win Friday night shutting out No. 25 Oregon State (5-7) on the road 6-0. The final score is not indicative of the pitching duel that ensued at Goss Stadium with only three total hits being registered. All evening UCSB capitalized on Beaver errors and an abundance of walks to get their guys across home plate in their fourth shutout of the season.

Sophomore Rodney Boone took the mound in his fourth start of the season and did not disappoint tossing 5.1 innings of one-hit baseball while collecting six strikeouts. He retired the first 13 batters of the game on his way to his second win of the season. Junior Conner Roberts made another dynamite relief appearance going 2.2 innings with only two walks allowed, and rookie Alex Schrier earned the final three outs to finish it off. As a unit, the Gaucho staff allowed just two hits on the day and posted 12 K's.

The game remained scoreless through the first four innings until the Gauchos broke the tie in the top of the fifth. Sophomore first baseman Kyle Johnson and freshman right fielder Nick Vogt each got on board earning a pair of walks, and senior shortstop McClain O'Connor notched the only hit of the game slapping a bases-clearing RBI triple to right field. He would then score himself on a Beaver error to give his team a 3-0 lead.

The final three runs of the game came across in the eighth inning with the Gauchos earning three walks and capitalizing on a pair of Oregon State errors to increase the lead 6-0. UCSB ended with a season-high nine walks.

O'Connor ended the day with a triple, two runs, two RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Sophomore Cole Cummings earned three walks and a run and freshman catcher Mason Eng collected a pair of walks.

UCSB will look to win the series tomorrow in game two. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m .
