SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swim teams kicked off this year's MPSF Championship meet Wednesday evening at Cal Poly's Anderson Aquatics Center. Both the men and women finished the day in third place, with the men earning 66 points and the women picking up 64. On the men's side, BYU sits atop the leaderboard with 74 points while Hawaii is in second with 70. On the women's side, BYU and Hawaii are knotted up for first with 74 points apiece.
Wednesday's events were the 200 Medley and 800 Free Relays for both the women and men. The best event of the day for the Gauchos was the men's second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The relay team comprised of Zach Dietz, Alec Cullen, Tim Lee, and Christian Martinez finished in 1:28.41, narrowly beating out third-place Cal Poly but finishing behind first-place BYU. The men's 800 Free relay team of Dominic Falcon, Dan Marella, Tim Lee, and Ryan Levy finished third in 6:31.04, with Hawaii finishing first and BYU taking second.
The women's squad finished third in both relays. The 200 Medley team of Danielle Carter, Katie Nugent, Dora Seggelke, and Bryn McGowan touched in 1:42.99. Maelynn Lawrence, Sydney Rouse, Molly McCance, and Paige Gambetta made up the 800 Free relay squad, finishing in 7:25.41.
The MPSF Championships continue tomorrow at Cal Poly's Anderson Aquatics Center in San Luis Obispo. No fans, parents, or spectators will be permitted. Click here for a schedule of events.
