UCSB Earns Second Straight Win Topping Northwestern 3-1

LARAMIE, Wyom.— The Gauchos closed out the UniWyo Invite on a high note earning a 3-1 win over Northwestern Saturday morning. UCSB Women's Volleyball will now ride its first win streak of the year into next weekend's Thunderdome Classic.

ON THE STAT SHEET

  • Froley notched her third straight 15+ kill match of the tournament leading all players with 16
  • The Gauchos out-hit the Wildcats .248 to .171
  • Michelle Ohwobete and Abrielle Bross each had 10 kills with Ohwobete collecting nine digs and Bross hitting an errorless 10-0-20 clip
  • Rowan Ennis picked up another eight blocks giving her 22 on the weekend
  • Three Gauchos in Ohwobete, Macall Peed, and Grace McIntosh sent down two aces

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set (27-25 UCSB)

  • The Gauchos led by as much as seven at 14-7 but the Wildcats fought back to hold a set point at 24-23
  • A clutch block by Ennis and a pair of kills from Ohwobete and Deni Wilson sealed the 1-0 for UCSB
  • Wilson was the early offensive answer posting a 4-0-6 line for a .667 hitting percentage
  • Grace Kloss saw eight of her 25 assists and four of her 10 digs

Second Set (25-20 Northwestern)

  • UCSB saw its lowest hitting percentage at .146 while allowing Northwestern to hit its best mark at .314
  • The two teams traded punches in a set that saw 13 ties and six lead changes
  • Tied at 18-18 the Wildcats rode a 7-2 run to the finish

Third Set (25-19 UCSB)

  • The Gauchos never trailed and led by as many as seven
  • UCSB out-hit Northwestern .375 to .074 and held the team to just nine kills
  • Back-to-back kills by Ohwobete and Froley while holding serve gave UCSB the tiebreaker

Fourth Set (25-16, UCSB)

  • The Gauchos dominated the final set of the tournament with its biggest point differential at nine points
  • UCSB hit its best swing rate of the match at .400 and converted on 11-of-16 sideout opportunities
  • Froley was the go-to late picking up six of her 16 kills
  • Kills by Wilson and Sophie Messinger sealed the second straight win for the Gauchos

UP NEXT
The Gauchos now return home for the Thunderdome Classic next weekend where they will play host to a trio of matches with Washington State and VCU.
