Gauchos Set to Clash with Conference Foes at UCR Spring Track Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB men's and women's track and field programs will be back at full strength this weekend for the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic. The competition starts with the hammer throw on Friday while the rest of the running and field events will pick back up on Saturday. In attendance from the Big West will be host UCR, Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton. Non-conference teams scheduled to compete include Southern Utah, Cornell and North Dakota State. 

The UCSB men will take a 6-0 dual meet record into this weekends competition. The UCSB women are 4-2 on the year in scored competitions. 

So far this season, eight Gauchos have broken into the UCSB all-time list.

Conference Leaders

Although the Big West regular season is just getting rolling, several Gauchos hold Big West #1 spots in their respective events. Thomas Gore-Schreck holds the top throw in the conference in the men's javelin. Schreck is a former Big West runner-up in the event. Zach Tombol and Lolene Swallow hold the top spots in the decathlon and heptathlon as UCSB is the only school to complete a multi event competition after the March 1st outdoor season start date. In the 3,000m steeplechase, Adam Avila and Kelsey O'Connell rank first going into this weekends competitions. 

1,500m Pack

This weekend the Gauchos will run seven men in the 1,500m in what looks to be a signature event on the track. Bryce Rausa, Guijarro, Ortolan, Tommy PostonGreg DotsonGeorge Baier and Andrew Farkas will teamup for the 3.75 lap event. Look for hot times on what appears to be another scorching Inland Empire afternoon. 

Men's Season Recap

The UCSB men started the season with dual meet victories against Westmont and Pepperdine. Next at the All-Cal, the Gauchos earned top honors against host UC San Diego and UC Irvine. Then at the Big West Double Dual, the men came out on top against UC Riverside and Cal Poly running their record to 6-0. 

Women's Season Recap

The UCSB women started off the season with four consecutive dual meet victories against Westmont and Pepperdine at the Round-Up and against UC San Diego and UC Irvine at the All-Cal. The Gauchos fell in the Double Dual to Cal Poly and UC Riverside taking their regular season record to 4-2.
